In 2005, the FRQS abandoned the term "axis" to adopt that of "strategic group" to identify the subsets of the various thematic networks.

With the strategic groups, members of the group define goals and common interests. Partnerships and links are naturally forged thereby strengthening group cohesion. Hence, management is more collegial and democratic.

The RHN currently numbers six strategic groups:

• Obstructive sleep apnea and cardiovascular morbidity factors
• Inflammation and remodeling
• Bioaerosols and respiratory viruses
• Cystic fibrosis
• Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
• Respiratory critical care
